embarrassments, (comma handwritten) here as well as elsewhere, (comma handwritten) would be felt by me,as they indeed (strikethrough)
have been,in common with others. But relying on what has passed I have placed
myself in a cool (cool is struck through by hand and cul is written above) de sac and I see no wa(y) (y handwritten) out.
However I shall look about me (and inserted by hand) seek for employment somewhere or on
other until the period arrives when you propose to commence the business of
your institution. My wife and myself have confined our view(w hand written)s and wishes to
your state, which I still hope I need not ultimately renounce. I shall there-
fore keep your proposal in view but if, (comma handwritten) they turned adrift, (comma handwritten) I am
compelled from (o and m are typed on top of one another)
necessity to fix permanently elsewhere, I must equally renounce my present
inclinations and(and inserted by hand) future intent.
In one respect your letter gives me sincere pleasure. The newspa (multiple letters struck in place)
papers informed us lately of your being afflicted with a dangerous illness. I
greatly rejoice for the sake of my own feelings and public welfare that
you are still (final l inserted my hand) in health. I hope you will so continue for many years of future
usefulness.
Have the goodness I pray you to present my assurances of great
respect to Mr. Cocke and the Board of Visitors.
Thomas Cooper.
